INDONEWSIAN.COM – No fewer than 84 junior golfers have converged in Abuja for the 5th Edition of the Leader Joe 1808 Charity Golf Championship.
This year’s competition tagged ‘Rescue Out-of-School-Children’ is holding at Tukur Buratai Golf Club and Resort Abuja
Speaking at the event, Executive Director of 1808 foundation and convener of the event, Leader Joseph Onus stated that this year’s edition is targeted at campaign to return out of school children.
‘This is our fifth edition of the 1808 Charity Golf Tournament and it is no longer news, that we have 20 million out of school children in Nigeria according to UNESCO and UN.
‘And we’ve been on this campaign for several years. So it’s rescue out of school children because this year our target is to see how to raise funds for at least a thousand students
‘And we are using golf as a platform, as a vehicle to raise that awareness. So that we can use it to raise awareness and also raise funds.
‘So by participating in this charity tournament, each child has paid 15,000 for another child to come back to school because to bring the child back to school, we’ve pegged it at 15,000 for public school, not private school, right?
‘So every child is now participating. They are going to have participatory certificates because now they are practicing charitism,’ said Onus.
Also speaking, the Captain of the TYB Golf course, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze stated that the aim of the event was to use the instrument of golf to raise funds to help children who cannot go to school due to funding and other factors. ***
