Lyon AFCON Zone village celebrates African culture

The Lyon CAN Zone village, established for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, is drawing a diverse crowd of African nationals eager to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of this continental tournament, all in a spirit of camaraderie and excitement.

Each day of the competition, team supporters and soccer enthusiasts from neighboring countries are welcomed to watch the matches live, in a setting that fosters interaction and celebrates social diversity.

«It’s a way to further engage with African diasporas and to highlight African culture, continuing Morocco’s long-standing tradition of connection with Africa», explained Ghizlane Zouhal, a founding member of Lyon CAN Zone, to MAP.

She emphasized that the goal is to present an authentic image of an Africa and a Morocco that are open to the world, enriched by the dynamic blend of their communities during this sporting event.

«This Friday will feature live broadcasts of four matches, with a large turnout of fans, capturing the unique passion for soccer that Africa is renowned for», noted Zouhal, who also serves as president of the French-Mediterranean Association for Living Together.

First launched in 2022 during AFCON in Cameroon, the village is a collaborative effort by several NGOs dedicated to promoting the continent’s culture.

The program offers networking opportunities, intercultural festive evenings, and opening and closing ceremonies that celebrate the vibrant colors of Africa.

Beyond the sporting and festive elements, the organizers aim to enhance the image and showcase the expertise of African countries within the Lyon region.

Through this initiative, they aspire to make the continental competition a multifaceted event that is not only sporting but also cultural and widely embraced by the public.
