IndoNEWSian.com – To mark the 732nd Anniversary of Surabaya, the city once again held its iconic Rujak Uleg Festival on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the former site of Taman Remaja Surabaya (TRS).

This much-loved annual tradition is not only about massive mortars (cobek raksasa) and the vibrant creativity of participants—many of whom wore costumes inspired by The Legend of THR—but also about the deep-rooted values of community spirit, unity, and cultural preservation.

More Than a Festival—A Cultural Identity

Yona Bagus Widyatmoko, a member of the Surabaya City Council, expressed his appreciation for the continued success of the event. He emphasized that the Rujak Uleg Festival goes far beyond entertainment.

“This festival has been going strong for over 20 years. The enthusiasm from locals—and even the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Tourism—proves our commitment to preserving local wisdom,” he stated.

Taste Made from the Heart and Togetherness

Yona joined local government officials in preparing and enjoying the traditional rujak uleg, a spicy fruit and vegetable salad. He highlighted that the true flavor comes not just from the ingredients, but from the heart.

“We prepared it with our hearts. Anything made with sincerity will always result in something great,” said the Gerindra Party politician.

A Dish That Reflects a City’s Diversity

Yona also shared the philosophy behind rujak uleg, pointing out how its diverse ingredients reflect the multicultural makeup of Surabaya.

“There are vegetables, fruits, a mix of flavors—and yet, when combined, they create something delicious. That’s Surabaya: diverse, complex, but beautifully united,” said the Chairman of Commission A of the City Council.

Driving Culture-Based Tourism and Unity

In celebrating the city’s anniversary, Yona expressed hope that Surabaya will continue to grow its cultural events, not only as a means of celebration but also as a driver of tourism and social unity.

“Happy anniversary, Surabaya. May events like this never fade. This is a true representation of our togetherness as a community,” said Yona, who also runs the local transportation company Yebe Trans.(@)
