German statistical media outlet ‘Transfermarkt’ included Son Heung-min’s first UEFA Europa League title, achieved 16 years after his professional debut, in its list of the ‘2025 football world’s eight miracles’ announced on the 25th.
Son Heung-min, who made his professional debut in 2010 with Bundesliga club Hamburger SV, established himself as a top-tier attacker in Europe by sweeping major individual awards such as the EPL, the English Premier League, top scorer and the FIFA Puskás Award. However, he remained distant from team trophies. In 2019, he reached the UEFA Champions League final but shed tears after a 0-2 defeat to Liverpool, and he never lifted a Bundesliga or EPL trophy.
Last May, he finally broke the cycle of trophy-lessness by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the 2024-2025 UEFA Europa League final. As captain, he also experienced the honor of lifting the trophy during the victory ceremony. His club, Tottenham Hotspur, had not won a trophy in 17 years, making the victory even more meaningful. The news of Son Heung-min and Tottenham Hotspur’s triumph became a major topic not only in England and South Korea but across European football. In the ‘eight miracles’ list, he was the only individual player selected, not a team or nation.
Other ‘eight miracles’ included Curaçao’s historic FIFA World Cup qualification, Newcastle’s EFL Cup, the League Cup, victory ending a 56-year trophy drought, and Crystal Palace’s first-ever FA Cup win.
