IndoNEWSian.com — Yona Bagus Widyatmoko, Chairman of Commission A of the Surabaya City Regional Representatives (DPRD Surabaya), has called on the city government to adopt a bold strategy for addressing the city’s urgent need for affordable housing. Drawing inspiration from Jakarta’s Rusun Pasar Rumput (Pasar Rumput Vertical Housing), Cak YeBe emphasized the importance of integrating low-cost vertical housing with local economic hubs.
“We visited the Ministry of Housing and Urban Settlements in Jakarta and saw firsthand the Pasar Rumput housing complex. It has 1,984 units, each measuring 36 square meters, with two bedrooms, a pantry, and a living room. It’s compact, modern, and integrated with three floors of public market space below it. Surabaya should take notes,” said Cak YeBe during a visit start on Sunday, June 2, 2025.
Monthly Rent Starting from Rp1.1 Million
According to Cak YeBe, the Rusun Pasar Rumput offers rental rates starting at Rp1.1 million and up to Rp2.25 million per month depending on the floor level—a pricing scheme that provides options for low- to middle-income earners.
“It’s an extraordinary initiative. The government, along with city developers, should be working hand-in-hand to create housing solutions like this. If Jakarta can, why not Surabaya?” he added.
Vertical Housing Integrated with Local Economy
He highlighted that modern urban housing shouldn’t just be about shelter, but also about economic integration. The Rusun model includes traditional markets on the lower floors and residences above, creating a sustainable urban micro-economy.
“Mortgage Plans Like a Motorbike Installment”
Saifuddin, a member of Commission A who joined the visit, emphasized the affordability aspect. “We hope residents can someday buy units through mortgage plans as simple as buying a motorcycle. That’s the level of accessibility we’re aiming for,” he said.
Call to Action for Surabaya
Cak YeBe concluded with a message for the Surabaya city administration: “Every citizen has the right to decent and affordable housing. Let’s stop dreaming and start building. The model exists. The vision is clear. Now we need commitment.”
This initiative aligns with Surabaya’s broader goals of inclusive urban development, sustainable housing policies, and boosting quality of life for all residents—not just the privileged few. (@)
