IndoNEWSian.com – Commemorating the 117th National Awakening Day (Harkitnas) on May 20, 2025, Yona Bagus Widyatmoko, Chairman of Commission A of Surabaya City Council—affectionately known as Cak YeBe—is calling on all citizens of the City of Heroes to honor the spirit of struggle in a grounded but meaningful way.

Wearing his official uniform and a traditional Surabaya headband, with the red-and-white flag and the council’s emblem on his chest, he delivered inspiring messages through local-style rhymes known as parikan.

“Jare semongko tanpo biji, nek arek Suroboyo yo kudu wani.” (“They say watermelons have no seeds, true Surabaya youth must be brave.”)

To Cak YeBe, bravery is at the heart of national awakening, especially in today’s complex socio-political climate. He emphasizes that National Awakening Day is not just an annual ritual, but a moment for honest reflection and a renewed commitment to anti-corruption values.

“Let’s rise for a better, cleaner Surabaya. All leaders and citizens must dare—dare to say no to corruption, collusion, and nepotism,” he said on Tuesday (May 20, 2025).

Cak Yebe also highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in public service and governance. The spirit of struggle must be present every single day, not just every five years.

“National Awakening Day is not just about history, but also a moral duty to serve without slowing down, without compromise,” The owner of Yebe Trans emphasised

Cak Yebe closed National Awakening Day with a final motivational parikan:

“Tuku jemblem nang kandangan, ojo sampek mlempem, tetep jaga semangat perjuangan.” (“Bought fried dough at the market, don’t let your spirit fade—keep fighting for the cause.”)

This, according to him, symbolizes the power of simplicity and sincerity in shaping a society that’s ready to rise.

“Real awakening comes not from luxury, but from sincere hearts, strong will, and bold integrity. Let us nurture this spirit—together, from small actions to big changes,” he concluded.
